Situated right on the doorstep of Tongariro National Park, LKNZ provides cheap accommodation in Ohakune right next to the north island ski fields on mount Ruapehu. As well as having affordable hotel style units, LKNZ also has a YHA backpackers lodge. In winter, Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields are the largest in New Zealand and receive the most annual snowfall on average. In the summer you can canoe, river raft, do the Tongariro crossing or even climb Mt Ruapehu or Mt Ngauruhoe (better known as Mt Doom these days from the Lord of the Rings).
