Mountain Climbing
In the tradition of sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand's greatest ever Mountaineer and the first person to conquer Everest, LKNZ pay homage to all of New Zealand's great peaks and what they have to offer us.
Ruapehu is one of the world's most active volcanoes, and the largest volcano in New Zealand. It is the highest point in the North Island and includes three major peaks: Tahurangi (2,797 m), Te Heuheu (2,755 m) and Paretetaitonga (2,751 m). All of these peaks can be conquered and vary in difficulty. Tahurangi, the highest peak, is actually no more than a moderately strenuous hike, accessible to anyone who is relatively fit, and has some of the most stunning views in the country.
The Girdlestone is the most challenging peak on the mountain, slightly lower in height than the summit, however it is far more challenging. Expert climbers only. Note: The slopes of the Girdlestone also have some insane chutes for skiing/boarding and the snow stays on them for much of the year.
