Skiing/Snowboarding

Ohakune is the closest town in the north island to the ski fields, just 20 mins from the Turoa car park. Mt Ruapehu has the largest ski fields in the country in both vertical rise and ski able terrain.

Turoa ski field, LKNZ's local mountain, is on the south-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu. It boasts Australasia's longest commercial ski run (measured by vertical descent) and also Australasia's highest lift (new high speed 6 seat chair.) Turoa has some of the most awesome natural skiing and snowboarding terrain in New Zealand. Huge basins, dizzyingly fast off trail bowls, hundreds of ski-able cliff drops and to top it off, deep powder stashes in the gullies and secret spots. Turoa offers 2 beginner areas for learners, an award winning terrain park, and the longest season of any ski field in New Zealand (June 20-1 November.) On a good day the hike to Mt Ruapehu's Crater Lake is a must to the travelling skier.

The mountain also has some areas that even people who have been here many times may not know of. The staff at LKNZ are happy to share some our mountains secrets with a guest who is inquisitive.
